Division General Juan José Gómez Ruiz was appointed to head the Mexican Army, replacing General Jesús Leana Ojeda, who is retiring. This appointment is part of ongoing changes within Mexico’s defense and foreign relations structure, aimed at ensuring continuity in national security strategies and institutional development.

The new Commander of the Mexican Army will be responsible for overseeing the administration and development of the Mexican Army, as well as the training of military personnel, “for the benefit of Mexico’s security and progress.” This appointment strengthens the operational structure of the armed forces within the context of the country’s strategic priorities.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente presided over his final event as head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he expressed his gratitude for the teamwork of the Ministry’s staff.

De la Fuente emphasized that his administration “prioritized the defense of Mexican nationals abroad, as well as respect for the sovereignty of the Mexican people.” During the event, he congratulated and acknowledged the work of Roberto Velasco Álvarez, who assumes leadership of the ministry.

The text reads, “Dr. Juan Ramón de la Fuente has decided to step down as Secretary of Foreign Affairs for health reasons. This is part of our project, and once his rehabilitation is complete, he will rejoin us in another capacity. I have decided to nominate Roberto Velasco Álvarez to the Senate as the new Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Roberto has served with us until now as Undersecretary for North America. I am sharing this video for your information.”

For his part, Velasco Álvarez highlighted his commitment to the country and “the responsibility to continue protecting Mexicans abroad, defending our national sovereignty, cooperating for mutual benefit, and continuing to actively participate in all global forums.” He also expressed his gratitude for “the successful leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under Secretary De la Fuente, which allowed us to successfully overcome various challenges.”

The new Commander of the Mexican Army graduated from the Heroic Military College as a Cavalry officer. He holds a degree in Military Administration and a Diploma in National Security and Strategic Studies, obtained from the National Institute of Public Administration in Mexico City.

Internationally, he served as Deputy Military Attaché at the Mexican Embassy in France, with concurrent accreditation to Belgium, the Netherlands, and Israel, and as Director General of the Secretariat of the Inter-American Defense Board in Washington, D.C.

The transition in the command of the Mexican Army and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs marks a moment of institutional significance, emphasizing continuity in state policies aimed at protecting the population and strengthening sovereignty.
